WEC Aldo vs Faber. Arco Arena.

The WEC/UFC put on a great event at Arco Arena this past weekend. Aldo vs Faber marked the first WEC promotion pay-per-view event, including two title fights and one undercard fight now being called "the fight of the decade" by Joe Rogan.

We started out at the weigh ins on Friday afternoon. It's amazing to think that some of these athletes regularly cut in excess of 15% of their total body weight to make their class limit. Seldom have I seen somebody so eager to down a bottle of Gatorade. Scott Jorgenson, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, and Urijah Faber were some of the huge WEC names on Saturday's card.

Saturday's fights sold out Arco. Our city's meathead population arrived en masse, in uniform via lifted Silverado, though I was quite surprised at how diverse the overall crowd makeup was. Sacramento rarely shows this type of enthusiasm and support for anything, but it seems as though the UFC/WEC, and more importantly Sacramento-area fighters (like Urijah Faber, Joseph Benavidez, Chad Mendes, and Danny Castillo), are like the second coming of the 2001 Sacramento Kings. The crowd noise was deafening.

While Urijah lost to Jose Aldo in the main event (five round unanimous decision), his pain (pictured below) was a significant gain for the sport and the fans.

This process reminds me of a time when Cuba Gooding Jr. was relevant, when Tom Cruise was cool, and when Aries Spears was...alive?

While we wait an eternity for each pick, through endless montages and mindless arguments between Count Chocula and Beaver Cleaver, let us hope for more Patrick Willis and less Kwame Harris. If you know a Raiders fan, be a responsible citizen and remove any guns or rope from their possession until Sunday.

Boondocks: The Final Season

One of my all-time favorite cartoons, Aaron McGruder's The Boondocks, is back for it's third and possibly final season. For those unaware of McGruder's work, The Boondocks started as a comic strip in 1996, running in the University of Maryland, College Park student newspaper, before moving onto The Source, and eventually syndication in newspapers nationwide.

Much of the storyline focuses on the daily interactions between young Huey Freeman, his younger brother Riley (both voiced by Regina King in the animated series), and their Granddad (voiced by John Witherspoon), as a larger commentary on American politics and ethnocultural issues. Nobody is spared.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that the show is able to run its entire season without being forced off the air (I won't be surprised if this video is taken down soon).

Protesters hurl slurs and spit at Democrats
Washington (CNN) - Civil rights icon and veteran Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, said anti-health care bill protesters Saturday repeatedly yelled the "N" word at him as he left a heath care meeting and walked to the Capitol.

"I haven't seen heard anything like this in more than 40 years, maybe 45." Lewis said. "Since the march from Selma to Montgomery really."

"Yeah, but it's okay," Lewis added. "I've faced this before. So, it reminded me of the 60's. There's a lot of downright hate and anger and people are just being downright mean."

The incident was confirmed by Rep. Andre Carson, D-Indiana, who was walking with Lewis at the time. Protesters were yelling, "'kill the bill, kill the bill' and the 'N' word several times," Carson said.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Missouri, released a statement late Saturday saying he too was called the "N" word as he walked to the Capitol for a vote and that he was spat on by one protestor who was arrested by U.S. Capitol Police. Cleaver declined to press charges against the man, the statement said.

Protesters also hurled anti-gay comments at Rep. Barney Frank, D-Massachusetts, who is openly gay, as he left the same health care meeting that Lewis attended in a House office building.

A CNN producer overheard the word "faggot" yelled at Frank several times in the lobby of the Longworth building. Frank said he heard someone yell "homo" at him.

"I'm disappointed," Frank said. "There's an unwillingness to be civil."

Frank, who said he rarely hears such slurs anymore, said the health care issue has become "the proxy for a lot of other sentiments. A lot of which are perfectly reasonable but some of which are kind of ugly."

A story that has been terribly underreported by the Sacramento Bee...

Last week, two reportedly unrelated hate crimes shook the UC Davis community, echoing the recent racial turbulence within the University of California as a whole.

A swastika was carved onto the door of a Jewish student in the Tercero dormitories on Feb. 19. A week later, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center was the target of an attack when derogatory terms were spray-painted on the center's front entrance, said Lt. Matthew Carmichael of the UC Davis Police Department.

The attacks add to the growing number of hate crimes recently experienced in the University of California system. Several weeks ago, members of a UC San Diego fraternity held a "Compton Cookout"-themed barbeque mocking Black History Month, and a noose was later found hanging in the campus library. At UC Irvine, a group of students attempted to disrupt the speech of the Israeli ambassador to the United States in early February. Many students consider the arrests to be associated with the recent controversy.

I don't want to subject anyone to Lost fanboy-status ramblings on this blog, but I must say I was quite excited watching this final season's premiere. My favorite moment was seeing Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada in a major American network role...Some of you may recognize him as the Third-to-last Samurai or Jackie Chan's somehow brother in Rush Hour 3, but Sanada is a long acclaimed Japanese actor. I highly recommend Tasogare Seibei or The Twilight Samurai, the winner of 12 Japanese Academy Awards and a personal favorite of mine. Maybe next we'll see Beat Takeshi on 24.

We also lost JD Salinger today. A great American author and inspiration for multiple generations of disaffected antiheroes. Salinger wrote two of my all-time favorite works - The Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey. A non-phony 'til the end.

4 men charged with U.S. Senate office infiltration in New Orleans

Four men were charged Tuesday after attempting to illegally access and manipulate the phone system in a district office of U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-Louisiana, a local U.S. attorney's office said.
Joseph Basel, 24, Robert Flanagan, 24, James O'Keefe, 25, and Stan Dai, 24, were charged with entering Landrieu's New Orleans office, which is federal property, under "false pretenses for the purpose of committing a felony," according to the attorney's office.
Law enforcement officials say they believe O'Keefe is the conservative activist of the same name who dressed up as a pimp last summer and visited an office of ACORN, a liberal community organizing group, in order to solicit advice on setting up a brothel, among other scenarios.

The Decade: Sports

The third question discussed in the survey was "what was your most memorable sports moment?" There were a lot of incredible sports moments during the last 10 years...championship runs, #756, comebacks, malices in palaces...but nothing was more significant for those of us in Sacramento than the Kings' run during the early part of the decade. Not just one moment, but several characterized as the Greatest Show on Court.

Welcome to the life of a Kings fan:

"I have no favorite sports moment, because the Kings always fucking lost at the start of the decade. Thanks to the NBA and Game 6 for ruining all of my sports hopes, dreams and wishes. Perhaps the most exciting team of all time..." - NDP

It pains me to even post this...

"Favorite sports moment? NOT when Robert Horry hit the three against the Kings. I traveled down to the Staples Center to watch game 4 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals. Mike Bibby was in the middle of his amazing playoff run and the Kings were about to go up 3-1 in the series. That was a long flight back to Sacramento." - Ryan

While the heartbreak and cynicism have been strong ever since that series, it's important to remember the good times, and the people who brought them to us.

While they didn't bring home any hardware, the mass hysteria and ensuing local pride was unforgettable. A bunch of goofy dudes came to the "least desirable destination in the NBA" and transformed Arco Arena into a cowbell-powered riot. You can move the team, but you can never take this era away from us.

The Blueprint - Jay-Z (2001)

Great content from start to finish, backed by classic production from Just Blaze, Kanye West, Timbaland, and Bink. This album was initially overlooked by some due to its debut on 9/11, but will be forever remembered as the greatest work from the "compadre/the Sinatra of my day."

Kid A - Radiohead (2000)

This is the album where Radiohead truly declared their creative and business independence. They made a totally off-the-wall album with no officially released singles and a visionary marketing plan. - Ryan

Fever to Tell - Yeah Yeah Yeahs (2003)

I started listening to them my freshman year in high school (when I was like 14/15 ha!) and I immediately fell in love. They're still my favorite band to this day, and even though they have musically evolved throughout the years, I still dig their original, raw, New York vibe. - Kaezel

Cold Blue - The Hope Conspiracy (2000)

This album came out shortly after the world was suppose to collapse due to computers not being able to turn the clock over to 2000. Hope Con's first full length album (Cold Blue) has been a huge influence to me musically both, as a spectator and musician. Going into 2010, they're still around surprisingly (most bands that fall into the hardcore genre, don't last more than a year or so) and I'm looking forward to seeing them next month at 924 Gilman. - Matt

Diplomatic Immunity - Dipset (2003)

If I had to pick, obviously anything Dipset put out was an instant classic. EX: "We're like the March of Dimes/ the way we march with dimes." So there's that. - NDP

The College Dropout - Kanye West (2004)

A debut remembered by many as an instant classic. Love him or hate him, Kanye put everything on the line with a bold album that gave an emphatic one finger salute to most sub-genre purists of the time. More than anything, this album largely defined my high school experience and attitude towards higher education (I did graduate..still waiting on that good ass job). - BW

Last year, photographer Tomonori "Rip Zinger" Tanaka released his first book to masses. This year Rip followed up with his second book, "Rip Zinger New York City", which chronicles his travels in the Big Apple. He held a release party at his new space, the Slope Gallery, in Tokyo. While we were celebrating our one year at Lucky Lefty's, our friends over at W-base in Tokyo were celebrating their fifth year in business. Quite an accomplishment, but no suprise knowing who's behind the shop. Take a look at their party from last week.

This is Moto, owner of W-base. Moto has been riding bmx for over twenty years and he kills it! Check out some of his other videos when you get a chance.

Still recovering from Black Friday, my sleep schedule is no longer appropriate for this hemisphere (and for those of you that know me, it was already abnormal). Four days later, I'm still amazed by the showing of support we had on Friday, from those people who lined up in the freezing hours of the early morning, to our friends who stopped by simply to say hello.

Thanksgiving is coming up, and many households in the Sacramento region are still food insecure. This Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Lucky Lefty's will be taking food donations at the shop. All goods will be donated to the Sacramento Food Bank.

The Sacramento Food Bank needs
- Canned and dry goods
- Fresh produce
- Unexpired, USDA certified, perishable food items (meat, eggs, dairy)
- Pots, pans, plates, and silverware

Anybody who brings in a donation will receive a discount for any in-store product. Please help out!

Over the last year, Lucky Lefty's has allowed us to travel quite a bit. Out of these great locations, Tokyo and Honolulu are still my favorite, though I'm not complaining about any others (well maybe, but that's neither here nor there). With that said, home is still where our heart is.

I was in San Francisco earlier this week visiting with some friends from Japan. Rip (on the left) has been all over the US this past month showcasing for Gentemstick snowboards. These boards are some of the most unique I've seen and are shaped to give a feel closer to surfing. Here are some photos from the night of the exhibition.
